Outdoor living spaces seem to be taking center stage in recent design trends. And a small lawn chair in the backyard just doesn’t cut it anymore.
People are now looking to add value and beauty to their outdoor spaces, with details such as hot tubs, commercial grills and fire pits setting the stage for outdoor entertaining. It’s no wonder, then, that gazebos are also gaining in popularity.
Attractive, beautiful and practical, gazebos are becoming the next big trend in outdoor spaces.
Types of Gazebos
Gazebos are typically square, octagon, oval or rectangular in shape, and can range in size anywhere from 6’x6’ to 25’x25’ and larger.
Most gazebos are constructed of treated wood, cedar or redwood, although they are also available in aluminum and vinyl. Vinyl and aluminum generally require less maintenance and are easy to clean. The lure of a wood gazebo, however, still remains a popular choice for homeowners. Wood gazebos can be ordered natural, stained, sealed or painted.
The different types and styles of gazebos range from simple to ornate. Railings, stairs, planter boxes and cupolas all add interest and detail to a gazebo. Gazebos are also available with single or double roofs.
Scouting Out a Spot for Your Gazebo
The first order of business before buying a gazebo is to scout out a spot in the yard and measure it. You’ll also want to decide how you wish want to use your gazebo. Do you want it as a peaceful respite at the end of the day? Then perhaps further back in the yard, away from the street and other houses is the ideal spot. Do you want it as an outdoor dining or entertaining space? Then the center of the yard, closer to the house, would be a great way to create an attractive, natural gathering space.
Next, you’ll want to call your local municipality and find out whether you will need a building permit for your gazebo. Although municipality building codes differ, most require building permits if the structure is permanent or if there will be electricity or plumbing run to it (i.e., for a hot tub).
Next, a concrete slab will need to be poured as a base on which the gazebo will sit. Gazebos may also be constructed on an existing deck or patio, if desired.
Buying a Gazebo Kit
Although you can purchase fully assembled gazebos, most are sold as kits, which are assembled at the site. This is because the transport of a fully assembled gazebo is expensive and downright difficult.
You can order pre-fab kits through your home improvement retailer, through a catalog or online. Pre-fab kits are then delivered on site by the manufacturer.
If you are up for a large do-it-yourself project, then a pre-fab gazebo kit is just for you. Otherwise, hiring a general contractor or a landscape contractor is probably your best bet, as they can handle the entire process. They will pour the concrete and build the entire beautiful gazebo – all you have to do is sit back and relax when your personal gazebo is finished.
Decorating Your Gazebo
Finally, have fun furnishing your gazebo with outdoor furniture, including swings, chaises and dining tables. Digging out flower beds around the gazebo and adorning your gazebo with loads of flowering plants will add the perfect touch. Consider hanging plants, such as ferns, for your gazebo, as they will provide color, as well as privacy.
