Buying Shed Designs and Plans

Want to build your own shed? If so, one of the first things you will need is a set of plans. But before you purchase a set of plans for that new shed, read this article.

Before You Buy: Adding a shed to your property can be a worthwhile endeavor and it can also add value to your home. However, one of the first things you must do before you buy a set of plans is go onto the property and measure out how much room you have for the shed. There are two ways to do this:

The first way to see if you have enough room for a shed is to locate the plans for the type of shed that you want, and jot down the dimensions of the shed. This is given as length and width, and is shown as, for example, 10 feet x 12 feet. Using a tape measurer, you can then go outside and locate a place that will accommodate at least that size shed.

The second way to get information is to go outside, find the place where you want the shed, and then measure that space. Use this as your guideline when shopping for a new shed.

Whenever possible, you want to have at least 4 feet extra on each side. This will allow for easier installation as well as room for walking around the shed.

What is Underneath? A very good idea before building your new shed is to learn what is under the ground where the shed will sit. You want to avoid placing your shed over water lines, cable lines, and other utility lines. Should anything happen to the lines you will not have to move your shed in order to dig.

Get Everything: When you shop for shed plans make sure that you buy plans that include everything that you will need. This includes a materials list, drawings of the structure (also known as floor plans), complete set of instructions including window and door installation instructions, and warranty. Some companies offer a free video with their package, which can come in very handy.

Upgrades: Many companies also have upgrade packages for those who wish them. Read the information on upgrades carefully before ordering to make sure that you are ordering everything that you will need to complete the upgrade. If you have any questions, it is advisable to call the company first.

Professional Help: If you feel that you will need help with your new shed, contact a professional contractor. These individuals can assist you in every phase of the job, and their expertise can be extremely useful for some areas of the job such as installing gabled roofs, electrical, and shingling.
