Before buying your new fountain consider the water source for the fountain. This is an important decision and the answer will often dictate what type of fountain you need to shop for.
In general, fountains use one of two water sources. One type is known as re-circulating and the other is known as dedicated. Normally, the reason for choosing one over the other is dependent on the amount of water that the fountain requires as well as the evaporation rate of the water—a consideration in very hot and dry climates.
Re-circulating Fountains: The vast majority of fountains that are used for home or garden are equipped with a small pump that constantly circulates the water through the fountain. These fountains have a reservoir pan to hold water which the pump will use to re-circulate the water. These fountains can be placed virtually anywhere and are not dependent on a fixed water source.
While it is powered on, the electric or solar pump will pump the water to the top of the fountain. The water then flows back down into the reservoir pan and the pumping process continues.
The re-circulating type of fountain will need water added several times a week depending on where you live. If you live in dry climate, you will need to refill the fountain more often. This is due to evaporation of the water.
Most of those who own these types of fountains agree that it is easier to add smaller amounts of water more often than it is to add a large amount at one time.
It is very important that these types of pumps never be allowed to run when there is no water in the fountain. This can burn out the pump and destroy it.
Dedicated Water Source Fountains: Large fountains require the use of a dedicated water source. This means that the water supply for the fountain comes from the plumbing. In some cases, this can be expensive to set up, and will require the use of a plumbing contractor.
Smaller fountains that require a dedicated water source often use the home garden hose. This type of set up includes a float value that lets the water flow when needed and restricts it when water is not needed.
If your plan is to have a large custom fountain with a dedicated water source, you should contact a reliable contractor to help with the needed additions for the water supply.
The manufacturer of your particular fountain will normally tell you what type of water source is required.
