Installing Wall Fountains

Mounted wall fountains are a popular choice for many people. These fountains can add spectacular design detail to many gardens and yards. They come in a wide variety of design options and they are more affordable now than ever before. But how do you hang one of these special types of fountains? Here are some simple steps to make sure your mounted wall fountain stays in place.

1. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions. These instructions should be included in your package at time of purchase. If you do not have your instructions, these tips may help.

2. It is always best to have two people present when trying to install a mounted wall fountain.

3. To supply power to the fountain, it is recommended that homeowners have a GFI electrical outlet installed behind the fountain itself. This outlet can be installed by a qualified electrician. Using this type of outlet will prevent the need for any visible hanging cords.

The electrician will probably already know this, but in case he does not, have the new outlet installed close to the center of the mounted fountain. You do not want it behind the basin or behind the hood. If you have a 2- or 3-tier fountain, have the outlet installed as close to the left side as possible without being visible.

While you are having this work done by an electrician you may want to also have the outlet wired to a wall switch. This will allow you to start and stop the fountain pump without the need to reach behind the fountain.

4. Light weight wall fountains can be installed on virtually any type of wall. In many respects, hanging a light fountain is just like hanging a framed picture. The same type of fasteners will work on light fountains.

Fountains that are heavier must be installed into solid studs. It is important to never hang a heavy fountain on sheet rock walls or plaster walls unless you are sure you can secure it to stud. Even if the homeowner believes that wall can withstand the weight of the fountain, one must always take into account the added weight of the water once it is placed into the fountain.
