Plant A Cutting Garden

Do you love cut flowers? Chances are you do and so do your friends and family. One way to have fresh cut flowers is to create your own cutting garden. With the cost of fresh flowers being what they are today, a cutting garden is also a good way to save a lot of money.

One problem with taking flowers out of the garden, however, is that it reduces the overall appearance of the garden. Thankfully, there is an answer to that dilemma. That answer is called a cutting garden.

A cutting garden is a section of garden that has been deliberately planted for the purpose of providing freshly cut flowers. When you have this special area of your garden set up, you will not have to worry about the main area of your garden looking bare.

The first step to creating your own cutting garden is to decide which flowers and plants you enjoy most. This is also a good place for you to try out new planting ideas and new flowers. Because this area is not really a part of the main garden, you can do virtually whatever you want to do here. Those who have the space often add their cutting garden to their vegetable garden, or close by it.

When deciding where to put the new garden, try to find a place that has lots of sunlight and good drainage. You need to prepare the soil as you would any flower garden and then add some humus (compose) to it. You can also use peat moss or even leaves that have been shredded. This is useful if you have sandy soil or clay soil.

While you are prepping your cutting garden, try to ensure that you have enough space for all the flowers that you will want to plant. Sometimes this is best done by trial and error, but do try to avoid having too little space.

You do not have to worry too much about the aesthetic aspects of a cutting garden. This is a working garden, so to speak, and it does not have to look like it came out of a gardening magazine. Experienced gardeners will often have cutting gardens that are laid out much the same as their vegetable gardens are laid out. Neat rows, with plenty of growing room between, are really all that is needed, especially if the cutting garden has been located, more or less, out of sight. You do want to plant your flowers in such a way that the work you do in the garden will be easy. This means allowing enough room to walk, plant, weed, and water.

If you are not sure which flowers are best suited to your area, do some online research or talk with your local nursery. These resources can help you avoid making costly mistakes as well as provide you with the supplies you will need for your cutting garden.
